It’s not so simple to answer the ever-popular question: “What should I do with my life?”  Surely, the most basic of answers will advise anyone to follow what he or she wants.  But then, that does not answer a question, as the fact of the matter is most people do not know what they want.  True, some people know what they enjoy; they know what makes them happy, but how does that channel or segue itself into a real job or a career?

Finding the right career has plagued past generations as much as it does the present generation.  However, with the advent of a powerful communications era, there are several ways of determining a specific and perfect career path for just about anyone.  But doesn’t this defeat the purpose of living?  Does it not remove from us the unwanted liberty of scrutinizing and ultimately finding the perfect career?  Hardly. 

Despite the worldwide web hitting its prime in the recent years, career selection is still as personal as ever.  Career-finding services still do not, by themselves, determine a person’s career.  What the services do is derive scientific and emotional input from the person, and from that, find a specific career for the person that can help him fulfill his dreams. 

It also helps that in the current world where billions upon billions of people exist, jobs are becoming more specialized – or in a more attractive word, customized for job seekers.  Perhaps, a couple hundred years ago, a writer would be called a writer, but currently there exist poets, screenwriters, copywriters, freelance writers, newspaper columnists, and many other forms of the job “writer.”  This allows the career-finding services to develop a sufficient database of different jobs that usually fit the specifications of people finding a new and fulfilling career. 

The trouble then arises in finding the most efficient service that raises one’s chances of finding the right career, because there are plenty.  These services also vary in their methods of help.

Some websites offer aptitude tests.  Yes, aptitude tests like the ones commonly taken by high school students.  While it may seem juvenile, the real fact is that people change, as well.  From high school, it is common to see several students change their image in college, perhaps in pursuit of a better social or academic standing.  It is the same when one graduates from college and goes into the work force – priorities just don’t stay where they are anymore.  So who knows?  What one got in the high school aptitude test may be the complete opposite of what he would get now.  Suffice to say, taking an aptitude test is worth a try; what is there to lose?

FIDM education (http://www.fidm.edu/academics/career-dreamscape/index.html) offers a free career aptitude test named Career Dreamscape.  The test consists of 81 questions about the likes and dislikes of the person with regards to fashion and design.  Of course, this is only one of hundreds of thousands of career tests, but it is a concrete example of a good one that delves into the specific interests of the person. 

Career Explorer (http://www.careerexplorer.net/aptitude.asp) offers a more general aptitude test and gives plenty of links to sites that can aid people with finding a fulfilling career.  It is also good to take a general career aptitude test before deciding on a certain area. 

A decent strategy here is to narrow one’s interests down to more specific careers before ultimately deciding on one, thus both general and career-specific aptitude tests have a purpose to them.

Several websites offer what we normally receive from our parents or the elderly:  advice.  The difference here is that these websites and services have already encountered thousands upon thousands of squirming graduates who don’t know a thing about the career they want to go into.  In this sense, the experience of the services really comes into play with regard to the help they give to people. 

The word “advice” gets thrown around too quickly these days.  Perhaps, it already lacks what the masses perceive as efficacy, but do not be fooled.  The advice these websites provide is both scientific and emotional – allowing for personalization of data, so the entire process can achieve quick and apt results.

Generally, however, these sites can only provide us with so much input for our lives.  In the end, whether the information age intervenes with one’s life or not, the decision remains in the hands of the person.  One must make sure to remember that these career-help services still utilize our own input, and that any pressure to take a certain career because of a random, stray suggestion must not be considered.  In the end, true happiness and contentment are only achieved by following what makes one happy and content – and that is more or less the final law on finding the perfect career path.
